Fluctuating chamfer size is one of the most common failures of chamfering machines, which may cause workpiece scrap and low productivity. Troubleshoot from three core parts: feed system, clamping mechanism and spindle.
1.Feed System Unstable feeding speed causes inconsistent cutting depth. Check for worn or stuck guide rails and excessive lead screw clearance. Misalignment from vibratory bowl or robot feeding also brings dimensional errors. Clean rails and calibrate feeding positioning.
2.Clamping Mechanism Loose clamping and workpiece slipping are major causes. Check worn jaws and iron scraps on clamping surface. For hydraulic models, inspect oil leakage and unstable hydraulic pressure. Remove debris, replace worn jaws and adjust clamping force.
3.Spindle System Spindle runout, loose bearings or loose cutter disc lead to vibration during cutting. Worn or chipped inserts will also affect chamfer dimension. Tighten cutter disc, check spindle runout and replace damaged blades or bearings.
Summary
Do not adjust parameters blindly when chamfer size varies. Check clamping tightness first, then feed positioning, and finally spindle and cutter disc. Regular maintenance of these components can reduce defective products.
