1. Equipment Selection: Prioritize High-rigidity CNC Chamfering Machines

Semi-automatic standard chamfering machines lack sufficient rigidity and tend to generate tiny vibration during processing, directly leading to chamfer dimension drift. For high-precision machining, fully closed-loop CNC chamfering equipment is recommended. The machine frame undergoes aging treatment to reduce stress deformation. The spindle radial runout is controlled within 0.005mm to lower rotation-induced errors.

2. Tooling System: Cutter Head and Inserts Are Core of Precision

Tool wear is the most common cause of tolerance out-of-spec.

  • Adopt carbide or PCD inserts for superior wear resistance;

  • Inspect cutter head runout regularly and keep it ≤0.01mm;

  • Build tool life records. Do not wait for chipping before replacement. Minor wear can break the ±0.02mm tolerance.

3. Fixture Clamping: Prevent Tiny Workpiece Displacement

Even 0.01mm workpiece sliding during machining will result in rejected dimensions. Finish-machine fixture contact surfaces and keep positioning surfaces clean without burrs or iron scraps. Adjust clamping force to a proper range. Excessive clamping force deforms the workpiece while insufficient force causes workpiece shifting. Positioning pins plus precision vises or elastic collets are preferred.

4. Optimization of Feeding and Cutting Parameters

Unreasonable cutting speed and feed rate produce cutting heat. The workpiece expands under heat and dimension changes after cooling. Adopt a cutting strategy with small depth of cut and low feed rate. Use continuous cooling oil if needed to reduce thermal deformation. The feed system uses ball screws to eliminate screw backlash and guarantee repeated positioning accuracy of feeding.

5. Environment and Workpiece Pre-treatment Control

Temperature variation changes metal workpiece dimensions. A constant-temperature workshop is suggested for high-precision work, with temperature fluctuation controlled within ±1℃. Let workpieces fully rest before machining to eliminate raw material internal stress. Clean workpiece surfaces to remove burrs and oxide scale and avoid interference on positioning datum.

6. In-line Inspection and Process Control

First-piece inspection alone is not enough for mass production. Carry out periodic sampling with micrometers and optical imagers, and implement SPC process quality control. Stop production immediately to check spindles, tools and fixtures once dimension offset trends are found. Take early intervention to prevent mass defective products.

Conclusion

±0.02mm chamfer tolerance is a systematic project instead of relying merely on equipment. Combined efforts from rigid machine tools, precision tools, stable fixtures, proper cutting parameters, constant-temperature environment and continuous inspection are required to achieve stable high-precision chamfering for precision parts in mass production.
