For metal workpiece chamfering material is the first factor in machine selection. The cutting performance of the three categories carbon steel stainless steel and copper aluminum varies greatly. Problems such as tool sticking hardening and chipping occur frequently. If the wrong machine model and tool are selected you will face issues such as excessive burrs fast tool wear and unstable dimensions.
1. Carbon Steel
Machining features: medium hardness, produces iron chips during cutting that tend to wrap around the tool head. Ordinary low carbon steel is easy to machine while high carbon steel has higher hardness.
Recommended machine: single head hydraulic chamfering machine, fully automatic CNC chamfering machine, pipe double head chamfering machine
Recommended tool: carbide insert
Process tips: for batch pipe processing prefer double head chamfering machine. For small hardware parts use CNC single head chamfering machine. Cutting fluid can be added to reduce iron chip wrapping and improve tool life.
2. Stainless Steel
Machining features: work hardening occurs easily during machining. Cutting resistance is high tool wear is fast and burrs tend to appear.
Recommended machine: servo CNC chamfering machine, reinforced rigid double head chamfering machine
Recommended tool: coated carbide tool
Process tips: prioritize machines with good rigidity and strong spindle stability. Control the feed speed and use cooling lubrication to avoid workpiece heating and hardening and prevent burrs on the chamfer surface.
3. Copper and Aluminum Alloy
Machining features: soft material with strong ductility. Tool sticking occurs very easily. Aluminum chips tend to adhere and the workpiece surface is prone to scratches.
Recommended machine: servo single head chamfering machine, small bench chamfering machine for small parts. For aluminum pipes a light duty double head chamfering machine is optional.
Recommended tool: PCD diamond tool is preferred. High gloss carbide insert is also acceptable.
Process tips: reduce spindle feed rate. Use air cooling or minimal quantity lubrication. Keep the tool edge sharp to reduce tool sticking and ensure a smooth chamfer surface finish.
Selection Summary
Batch carbon steel pipe processing: double head hydraulic chamfering machine
Stainless steel precision parts: servo CNC chamfering machine
Copper aluminum small parts or profiles: servo single head chamfering machine with PCD tool
Before purchasing a chamfering machine confirm the workpiece shape solid or pipe, workpiece dimensions and chamfer tolerance requirements so the manufacturer can match the most suitable equipment solution.
